Why Shopify Customers Abandon Their Carts
Cart abandonment is rarely about the cart. Here are the real causes and what to change on your Shopify store.
A customer who reaches the cart has already decided they want the product. Abandonment at that stage is an expensive failure because the hardest part of the work was already done.
The main causes
- Cost surprises. Shipping, duties or taxes appear for the first time inside checkout.
- Delivery uncertainty. No date, no range, no clarity for the customer's country.
- Risk. Return terms are unclear or written defensively.
- Friction. Forced account creation, long forms, repeated address entry.
- Payment mismatch. The customer's preferred method is missing.
- Second thoughts. The page never fully answered a question, and the pause exposed it.
What to change
- 01State total cost logic early. A shipping threshold in the header is more effective than a discount code.
- 02Show a delivery expectation on the product page, not only at checkout.
- 03Write return terms as a reassurance, in one sentence, near the button.
- 04Offer guest checkout and reduce fields to what fulfilment truly needs.
- 05Match payment options to the markets you actually sell to.
Recovery is the second half
A recovery flow in Klaviyo should behave like a helpful reminder rather than a discount reflex. Repeat the product, restate delivery and returns, answer the most common objection, and only consider an incentive in a later message if the data supports it.
Common mistakes
- Sending three discount emails, which teaches customers to abandon deliberately.
- Treating abandonment as one behaviour rather than several different reasons.
- Fixing checkout while the product page remains unclear.
